FBI Response to OIG Follow-Up Report Concerning Hanssen Security Reforms

FBI Assistant Director John Miller today responded to the release of the Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG) report entitled, “Review of the FBI’s Progress in Responding to the Recommendations in the Office of the Inspector General Report on Robert Hanssen, Special Report, September 2007.” The report is a follow-up on the security reforms the FBI has made since the August 14, 2003 OIG report entitled, “A Review of the FBI’s Performance in Deterring, Detecting, and Investigating the Espionage Activities of Robert Philip Hanssen.”

“The Inspector General has concluded that the FBI has made significant progress in implementing the recommendations made by the 2003 report. The OIG determined that although we are still making efforts to implement some of the recommendations in the report, we have fully satisfied or made credible progress toward applying many of the recommendations.

“While the OIG found that some of the recommendations had not yet been implemented, we continue to concur with all the recommendations made by the original report. We will continue to work with the OIG to make additional progress toward implementing these recommendations and in our efforts regarding espionage activities on the whole.

“We appreciate the work done by the OIG to improve the FBI’s internal security.”
