FBI Laboratory Specialized Training Program

Examination of Footwear Impression Evidence

Course dates to be announced

This is a one-week course designed for crime laboratory examiners who are conducting footwear examinations and/or comparisons in the laboratory. This course presents the most current methods for the location and retrieval of footwear evidence from the crime scene, reviews the physical and chemical enhancement of impression evidence, and covers all aspects of the comparison of shoes with crime scene impressions. Footwear manufacturing processes, as they relate to the examination process, are also covered. A significant portion of this course is devoted to hands on comparison of footwear standards with questioned crime scene impressions through practice casework exercises. The course instructors review these exercises in class, and feedback is provided to the student examiners.
